Pure Barre- Pure Barre is pure awesome. This workout uses a ballet bar to perform small isometric movements which are great for burning, toning and are safe for your joints because not a lot of jumping is involved.

Zumba-Zumba is way too fun. It is such a great way to just dance it out and know that it is worth it! This is a great cardio centered dance workout to do with your girlfriends!

Spinning- Spin classes are on the rise again and for a good reason! Riding bikes is a great cardio workout and really focuses on the legs and endurance.

Boot camps-Boot camps are becoming more popular and are a great way to get your butt kicked. There are so many different boot camp programs out there (private or corporate) that give a great alternative to weight training at the gym.

Yoga- Yoga may not be the highest calorie burning workout, but it is great for relaxation, flexibility and bone health. I would recommend trying out Bikram’s Yoga every once and awhile to throw some heat in to the workout.

Tea time! This is a pretty typical Mother’s Day event and for a good reason! It is such a fun way to get together with the girls for a low key brunch or afternoon. You can dress up or dress down and relax over a nice cup of tea!

Cooking lessons! If you or your mom are into cooking, this is a great bonding experience. Learn some fun recipes and professional cooking tips together!

Plan a picnic! I think picnic are very underrated. Find a quiet spot with a gorgeous view, find a vintage picnic basket and you are on your way! The great thing about picnics is the thought that goes into them. They are simple gestures that go a long way!

Here are 5 delicious recipes, fit for any mom looking to kick back on a Spring afternoon.

ABSOLUT Sunbeam Cocktail
Serves 1 glass, adapted from ABSOLUT Drinks

• 4 Parts ABSOLUT Ruby Red
• 1 Part Honey
• 3 Wedges Grapefruit
• 1 Wedge Blood Orange/Red Grapefruit

Spring Fling

• 1 cup fresh mint leaves
• 2 lemons (sliced into rounds)
• 1 cucumber (sliced into rounds)
• 2 cups vodka
• 2 cups fresh lemon juice
• 2 cups club soda
• In a large pitcher combine the sugar, mint lemons and cucumber. Add the vodka and lemon juice and let stand for 30 min. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then chill for another 30 min. When ready to serve add the club soda and serve in rocks glasses filled with ice.

Black & Blue Mojito (AKA “Skinny Jeans Mojito”) from Modern Mom

• 1.5 oz 10 Cane rum (96 calories)
• 1 oz lime juice (8 calories)
• 1 oz sugar-free sweetener (made from Splenda) (i.e. Monin) *
• 3 blackberries (10 calories)
• 10 blueberries (8 calories)
• 10 mint leaves (0 calories)
• Splash of club soda (0 calories)

Directions: In a tall collins glass, muddle the berries and mint with the lime juice and sugar free syrup. Add the rum. Top with crushed ice and stir well. Garnish with mint sprig and berry.

Southern Girl’s Lemonade

Combine 1½ oz. gin, ¾ oz. Grand Marnier, ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice, ¾ oz. honey, 4 muddled cucumber slices, and 4-6 muddled mint leaves in a shaker. Shake and loosely strain over crushed ice. Top with soda and garnish with a mint leaf and cucumber slice.

Skinny Strawberry Smash from Modern Mom

• 1.5 oz SKYY Infusions Dragonfruit
• 4 lemon quarters
• 1 oz cranberry juice
• 2 strawberries
• 2 packets Truvia (Stevia-based)

Directions: In a mixing glass, muddle the strawberries with the lemon quarters, cranberry juice and Truvia. Top with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with strawberry and basil.

Instead of talking about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, let’s talk about ways that you can support local production. Even as local as your own backyard! On a close to daily basis, we are constantly reminded of the importance of recycling, using environment friendly products and other very cliche “green” options.

Here is a way of going green that is helpful, potentially money saving and fun! More people are utilizing farmers markets and locally grown products to support farmers and organically grown products. People are also turning to their own personal gardens. Most likely, your yard is either perfectly manicured, or covered in children’s toys, either of which is completely usable for an “urban garden” (even if you are living with a backyard balcony). These ideas for backyard gardens don’t ruin any aesthetics and it is such a fun way to not only save money by growing some of your own staple items, but it is a great way to get your kids involved. It’s educational and great quality time.

Home sprouting is another new trend. Sprouted wheats, beans and different nuts are packed with nutrients, and it is so easy to do at home. This is a great sprouting resource for different items to sprout, how to do it and even different recipe suggestions. Having jars around the home is a great option for storing all the food you are sprouting/growing for long periods of time. It’s also a great alternative to plastic storage ware and is an easy way to portion out breakfasts, salads or other meals for on the go families. Check out this genius idea.
